Applying from Canada

Canada has two Croatian posts and the split is unusually precise: residents of Ontario excluding the city of Ottawa, plus Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, may apply only through the Consulate General in Mississauga; everyone else applies only through the Embassy in Ottawa. Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 11 January 2024, so Canadian documents are now apostilled rather than legalised — provincially in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec, and by Global Affairs Canada everywhere else.

What catches people out in Canada?

The law is the same everywhere. These are the local rules: the ones that are only written down at one post, or not written down at all.

  • Ottawa the city is carved out of Ontario

    Read the jurisdiction rule twice. Ontario files through Mississauga — except the city of Ottawa, which files through the Embassy. The carve-out is deliberate, and it is the most common filing error from Canada.

  • Apostille, not legalisation, since January 2024

    Canada acceded to the Hague Convention on 11 January 2024. Guidance written before that date describes consular legalisation and is now wrong. Which authority issues the apostille depends on the province: five provinces do it themselves, and Global Affairs Canada covers the rest.

  • The fee quoted in Canadian dollars is the same fee

    MVEP publishes some Canadian fees in euro and some in Canadian dollars, which makes it look as though a child registration is charged twice. CAD 30.12 and €20.57 are one fee in two currencies. Consular fees are reviewed roughly every six months for exchange rates, so treat any figure here as an estimate and confirm it with the post.

  • The name of the birth certificate matters

    Croatian posts want the record that shows both parents. In Canada that is the Certified Copy of the Birth Registration or the Statement of Live Birth, not the wallet-sized short certificate — and ordering the short one costs a full apostille-and-translation cycle.
